Vocal Exploration

Betthany Merrit from the Cushman School writes:

I recently attended a Central Florida Orff workshop with clinicinist Angela Broeker. She is Director of Choral Activities at the University of St. Thomas where she conducts the Chamber Singers and Womens Choir and teaches undergraduate courses in choral conducting and choral methodology. She mentioned that it is more important for young singers to experiment with vocal than to match pitch. She recommends sirens, cuckoo birds noises, tongue clicks, owl sounds, i.e. anything to get kids singing in head voice and switching registers.

She shared with us the story of Mr. Wiggle and Mr. Waggle. (If you are unfamiliar with the story, just goggle it!). I used it with my kids; they loved it because of the sheer fun and I loved the vocal exercise they got without know it 🙂 Moreover, I even used the story– finger play and all– with my big kid Fourth Grades (they loved it the most!).

I am looking for stories and ideas about how you get your kids to explore the voice. Also, of course these vocal exploration could transfer to instruments. Ideas? Funny stories?
