Last week I posted the 5 big ideas that were used in the framing of the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards. Now I’m going to take you a little deeper into the big ideas and the enduring understandings that serve as the basis of our new standards.
The first big idea is, “Critical Thinking and Reflection.” Three enduring understandings fall under this big idea. Please keep in mind that enduring understandings serve as an anchor for a unit of study. These area understandings that we want the students to remember long after they have forgotten many of the details associated with the study of our subject. They serve to answer larger questions such as, “why is this worth studying?”
- Cognition and reflection are required to appreciate, interpret, and create with artistic intent.
- Assessing our own and others’ artistic work, using critical-thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, is central to artistic growth.
- The processes of critiquing works of art lead to development of critical-thinking skills transferable to other contexts.
What kinds of benchmarks do you expect to see fall under this category? We will look closer at them over the course of the week!
