NGSSS Big Idea 2: Enduring Understanding 3

For the rest of this week the posts will be talking about Big Idea 2 in the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards.

Big Idea 2: Skills, Techniques, and Processes, Enduring Understanding 3: Through purposeful practice, artists learn to manage, master, and refine simple, then complex, skills and techniques.

Thread one is singing specific as it moves through the elementary grades.

MU.K.S.3.1     Sing songs of limited range appropriate to the young child and use the head voice.

MU.1.S.3.1      Sing simple songs in a group, using head voice and maintaining pitch.

MU.2.S.3.1      Sing songs in an appropriate range, using head voice and maintaining pitch.

MU.3.S.3.1      Sing rounds, canons, or ostinati in an appropriate range, using head voice and maintaining pitch.

MU.4.S.3.1      Sing rounds, canons, and/or partner songs in an appropriate range, using proper vocal technique and maintaining pitch.

MU.5.S.3.1      Sing part songs in an appropriate range, using proper vocal technique and maintaining pitch.

Do you notice how each benchmark provides added support at each grade level?  I appreciate how this thread insists that teachers use music that uses the most appropriate range and that students must use head voice. What are your favorite ways to get children to use their head voices?
