A Twist on Recorder Karate

If you’ve always been interested in recorder karate but didn’t want to purchase all of the materials, you can use your own or check out the web for teachers who have already designed their own programs!

This website: http://portablerecorder.edublogs.org/2009/04/10/1st-degree-white/ has links to notes, music, downloads, and resources for you to use to design your own recorder karate program.

Do you use recorder karate or a variation in your classroom? Do your children love it?

Thanks so much for this site! We DO use Recorder Karate, and we DO love it!

One thing I like to do to have the students help each other is to award beads (pony beads — they come in cool colors, and some even glow in the dark!) to the Tooter Tutors. Here’s how it works:

Once a student has earned a particular belt, they are qualified to be a Tooter Tutor and help another student earn that belt. They help with things like fingering, note values, articulation, etc. Once the “student” earns that belt, the Tutor earns a bead to tie on to his/her belt. I also post a sheet with the Tooter Tutor names and the following poem at the top:

A tooter who tooted a flute Tried to tutor two tutors to toot! Said the two to the tutor, “What’s harder — to toot, or to tutor two tutors to toot?”

You can find Recorder Karate (and the wonderful website that goes along with it) at MusicK8.com.

Thanks, and have a wonderful Wednesday! Kristi English
